Eagle Ladies take Bronze at AAI National Road Relays

The Eagle ladies team, comprising Rhona Lynch, Niamh Roe and Anne Marie Healy, accompanied by team manager, Pat Murphy, took the bronze medals is todays AAI National Road Relays.  In a hard fought race, amid stiff opposition, Eagle took the Bronze, behind winners Dundrum South Dublin AC (DSD) and host club, Raheny Shamrock.

As last year, when the same trio took Silver, the opposition were again surprised at the Eagle performance.  Indeed the AAI website suggests Raheny trying to retain their title from DSD and two strong Clonliffe teams.

About 15 or 16 teams competed in the ladies event.

Niamh took the first lap of approx. 1 mile, finishing in a group of 5 in 5:21.

Rhona went second, doing the longer two lap leg and was still in the main group at the end of the first lap.  On the second lap, she moved up to fourth, finishing in 11:07.

Anne Marie took the anchor leg of 1 mile and was passed by two runners shortly after starting, but passed two others before entering the closing stages.  Using her renowned finishing kick, she passed the third placed runner just 100m from the finish line, completing the lap in 5:33, giving the Eagle team a total of 22:03.  Winners DSD finished nearly a minute ahead in 21:06, while Raheny finished in approx. 21:35.

The opposition this year was much stiffer than other years and team numbers were significantly up also. Local club Leevale AC also took part and these two teams comprises the only Cork representation in the 4 relay races held today (Senior and Masters in both Ladies and Mens)

Congratulations and well done (again!) to Eagle ladies!
