A strong and gutsy run by Niamh Roe in the Munster Senior Road Championships in Ballyea, Ennis on Sunday saw her just piped on the line by Corina Walsh, West Waterford, for the silver medal.
From the outset, Niamh got herself into a good position upfront and soon took over the lead bringing the challenge to the rest of the field. They were into the second half of the race before she relinquished the lead to the eventual winner Carmel Parnell of Leevale AC. Ann Marie Healy, also running strong and closing fast in the latter stages of the race, finished fifth.
Eagle’s only representatives at the championships on a good day for running and on a tough hilly course, did the club and county proud claiming three gold medals and a bronze between them. Niamh took gold in the Novice event while Ann Marie was 1st in the O/35 category.
Cork were winners in the Senior Ladies event with 19 points (1, Carmel Parnell; 3, Niamh Roe; 5, Ann Marie Healy; 10, Mary Sheehan), from Clare, 38 points and Waterford, 39 points. Full Results on Munster Board’s web site: http://www.munsterathletics.com/
